About Boxing BC

BOXING BC BOARD

Boxing BC is the governing body for amateur boxing in the province of British Columbia. It is sanctioned by Boxing Canada (CABA), the International Boxing Association (AIBA),  and viaSport BC. 

Our purpose is to provide the residents of British Columbia access to and participation in the opportunities, programs and activities of amateur boxing. 

Boxing BC shall recognize and support the goals of each individual member and provide the opportunity to instill in the members confidence, self-esteem, respect for others, a sense of discipline and concepts of fair play and sportsmanship that all communities shall benefit.

The board is made up of officers elected by voting members and those appointed by the board. The Board of Directors are concerned with issues and decisions related to the long-term direction, sustainability,  and relevance of Boxing BC.

VALUES

These statements shall form the values held by Boxing BC and reflect the ideals of the Society that the programs and opportunities provided shall benefit all member athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers:

  • Opportunities shall be positive, enjoyable and educational in an environment free from harassment and abuse
  • Participation shall be devoted to safety, physical conditioning and character building
  • Respectful communication shall be honest and open with issues and problems being dealt with in a professional and un-biased manner
  • Integrity, sportsmanship and excellence shall produce pride-filled results in all areas of participation

Boxing BC’s Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of the Association shall be the Officers of the Society and shall, with the exception of the Past President and appointed positions, be elected for two-year terms by the Voting Members of the Association as specified in Section 7.

Chairman of all Boxing BC and Executive/ Board Meetings, is a member ex-officio of all Committees
and the Association’s representative to the National body.

DAVE BRETT

Is, upon election, automatically one of Boxing BC’s two representatives to Boxing Canada and shall be registered with the National body as the representative for British Columbia holding the national vote; is Chairman of all Boxing BC and Executive/ Board Meetings and is a member ex-officio of all Committees; is a signing officer on all Boxing BC’s accounts; presides at all meetings in which he/ she is the Chair and his/ her rulings, when concurred with by the Executive, are final; shall prepare and present an annual report at the Annual General Meeting of the Association. The Presidency is for a term of two years and the incumbent can succeed him/ herself in future elections.

Dave is the owner and head coach of Griffins Boxing and Fitness in North Vancouver, BC.  Dave has a B.Sc in Biological Life Science from UBC and is a National Level Comp Dec Certified Coach in Canada, a Star 1 Coach Internationally, and received his professional Coach designation in 2017. Dave has coached athletes in competition across Canada, in the USA as well as in Cuba, Mexico, Ireland, England, Holland and Sweden. One of his highlights as a coach was when he was the Head Coach for Team BC at the Canadian Winter Games in 2019.  As an athlete, his highlight was winning the 2015 BC Golden Gloves at 91+kg. 

Outside of his time in Boxing, Dave spends time with his three kids, his wife and his motorcycle.

Dave has been on the Board of Boxing BC since 2004 and has been part of the team bringing amazing changes to the Organization.  Dave is passionate about Culture and about Team and has goals of coaching with Boxing Canada as well as helping athletes and coaches reach their full potential!  Thanks for all you do for Boxing BC!

Shall assume the position of the President in his/ her absence. Responsibilities shall include organization of tournaments, games and major competition planning; liaising with all Boxing BC sanctioned events; liaison with Boxing Canada for Nationals; liaison for other Provinces for events.

If I may I’d like to provide a short background piece about myself for the board or those with votes who may not know me and would like some more information. I’m a 46yr old married father of 3. I’m originally from Wales, UK but now have my Canadian Citizenship, we’ve lived here as a family since 2009.

In my younger years I boxed in North Wales up to my late teens, and I’ve played soccer all my life. My current personal outlet for fitness is ultramarathons which I compete in regularly, most recently in Vernon where I placed 4th male in a 50km trail race.

My professional capacity is as a production manager for a global manufacturing company called Kingspan, I’ve worked for them since 1995 in a variety of roles, so almost 30 years with one company, highlighting my loyalty, commitment, responsibility, passion and ambition.

Volunteering includes as an assistant coach at Abbotsford boxing and fitness where I’ve organized and coached team attendance locally and further afield such as Kelowna, Calgary, Quesnel and in the US, I’m currently at the “training” status of competitive development and I have some courses to attend next month to reach “trained” status allowing me to corner athletes provisionally and nationally. 

This combined with a lifetime of being active in other sports and coaching for more than ten years stands me in good stead for an ever-evolving future.

  • at training status for competition development with boxing canada
  • attending courses in September to reach trained status allowing me to coach provisionally and nationally
  • professionally manage approximately 50 employees and a very demanding production schedule

 I am at the stage of life where more satisfaction is gained from helping others than chasing personal dreams, giving of myself for the betterment of hard working, dedicated athletes.

If I was fortunate enough to win people’s votes, I would certainly say winning things and being successful is possible for the athletes, but I would guarantee that I would be at their service as much as I possibly could with an ear to listen, an experienced voice to advise, a shoulder to cry on if necessary, and a colleague, teammate, coach and friend for the good times when they come along!

JON QUINIT

Shall assume the duties of President in the absence of both the President and the 1st Vice President. Responsibilities shall include increasing the number of members; quality and quantity of member services; fundraising; athlete assistance program; volunteer development, social media; liaising with the media, clubs and the sports community.​

Jon is the owner and head coach at Quinit Boxing in East Vancouver.  Jon’s passion for boxing development has helped add many athletes to the Boxing BC Provincial team.  Jon was also a 2X NATIONAL CHAMPION, 3X NATIONAL TEAM MEMBER, 2009 FRANCOPHONE GAMES BRONZE, and 2010 RINGSIDE CHAMPION. Jason is the owner and head coach of Island Boxing in Victoria, BC.  Jason brings to the board a wealth of knowledge on promotion as well as his vast experience in boxing both amateur and professional.  Jason is a great new addition to the Board of Boxing BC, welcome!

MEHRAN BAGHAIE

TREASURER

Shall oversee maintenance of the financial records of the Society and shall have an accounting
background or similar designation satisfactory to fulfilling the duties required.

Shall maintain the financial records of the Society and receive and disburse all funds belonging to Boxing BC, whether absolutely or in trust. The Treasurer shall have an accounting background or similar designation satisfactory to fulfilling the duties required, preferably with experience in non-profit Associations. The Treasurer shall be a signing officer on all Boxing BC accounts and shall present an audited budget; assure records are kept; expense claim approvals setting fees; preparing annual financial reports; liaising with auditors; preparing reports for Executive as needed and approving expense claims.​

“Mehran Baghaie” has been involved in Sport of Amateur Boxing over 25 years. He has served Boxing BC as a treasure for 3 terms. As a “treasurer” he has had a track record of running balance budgets and with number of surplus prosperous years.​

Mehran became a certified Boxing Coach in 1996 and have been fully certified level 3 coach since 2006. He owns and has operated his own Business Corporation for past 26 years; therefore he offers the Boxing BC a vast business experience. He has worked with numerous Charted Accountants & Certified General Accountants in preparation of financial statements (audited and unaudited), budgets and fiscal directions. Further he has prepared and filed accounting and explanatory reports.

As Treasurer for Boxing BC, he will work to obtain and maintain funding for Boxing BC. He hopes to assist Boxing BC achieving fiscal stability and prosperity with utmost transparency to all its members.​

JEFF LALJEE

CHIEF OFFICIAL

Shall be a Level 4 Official or higher and will be elected by Boxing BC Officials.

JEFF LALJEE

Shall be a Level 4 Official or higher and will be elected by Boxing BC Officials on even years during the corresponding Election of Officers. Responsibilities shall include overseeing all BC officials; designation of officials to attend sanctioned shows and tournaments in BC; appointment officials to inter-Provincial and National Tournaments; conduct clinics; the certification and updating of BC Officials.​

AIBA 1 Star,  Referee and judge  Having started boxing at 12 yrs old, with a career spanning 14 years, Jeff’s major highlights include, winning Gold at the Canadian Winter Games in 1987. Jeff started Officiating in 2006 and became the Chief Official for Boxing BC in 2015. Jeff is an AIBA 1 Star Referee & Judge. Jeff’s officiating career’s highlights include, the World Police & Fire Games in 2009, Western Canadians in Red Deer Alberta in 2014, the Canadian National Championships in 2014, 2016, 2018 & 2019 and Internationally at a 5 Nation competition in the Dominican Republic. He is the recipient of the John Skanks Memorial Award in 2015, the Harold Mann Award in 2018 and the Ron Whalley Memorial Award for Official of the Year for 2018. Jeff is proud to provide regular boxing clinics to new and current officials.

The Medical Director shall advise and make
recommendations to the Board and Executive on matters concerning health and safety in the
sport of amateur boxing within the Province of British Columbia.

20 years coaching experience and a member of the provincial coaching staff since 2017. International experience as a coach and competitor in Australia, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Italy, and France. Highlights have been facilitating training camps in Cuba and Mexico, running a boxing clinic in Nicaragua for at risk youth, and the ongoing work with the other members of the BC High Performance team to raise the level of our provincial programs. ​

SETH LENETSKY

Seth is a US born sport scientist that has been based out of Victoria since early 2018. Educated in New Zealand, Seth has multiple advanced degrees in exercise science, strength and conditioning, and sports biomechanics. In his time as a practitioner Seth has worked at the highest levels of sport, engaging with elite athletes and teams in boxing, NFL, MLB, NHL, UFC, America’s Cup, professional rugby, and at the Olympic level.

Jonathan Hannah

Jonathan’s boxing journey started at the age of 12.  He was told to check out a Boxing Gym and from that first class he was hooked. Jonathan never originally intended on competing, just to loose some weight and get fit. But as time went on he gradually moved in the direction of competition, more so because he was too timid to give any reason why he shouldn’t. And now, 10 years later, he is competing at a high level in the sport that he loves, with aspirations of making it to the Olympics one day.

Nyousha Nakhjiri

Nyousha grew up being extremely involved in sports; She played soccer at a high level until an injury forced her to take a break from the sport and in search of a different way to stay active. From the first day she stepped into a boxing gym, she fell in love with it and had her first fight within a year. 5 years later, she has had 50 amateur bouts, won multiple BC provincial and golden gloves titles and has represented BC at the Nationals. She has fought internationally in Ireland, England, USA, and Mexico and is currently working towards winning a National title, securing her spot in the NT and representing Canada at Olympics 2024 at 52kg. Her goal as the female athlete representative is to encourage more female athletes to start and develop their boxing skills and to help lead the next generation of British Columbia’s female boxing. “This sport has helped me grow confidence and tap into potential I never knew I had, and I would love to give back to it by helping our athlete community”.

Andy has been involved with boxing and combat sports since 1999. Growing up in the gym he starting by carrying buckets and holding pads then carried on to preparing fighters for competition. Andy has a true passion for boxing and continues to combine it with his love of teaching. Andy intends to bring integrity, accountability and an accessible and transparent approach to governance for Boxing BC.  Your calming nature helps us build Boxing BC’s strong foundation, thank you Andy!

Peggy Mearz

Peggy started Bulldogs Boxing in 2009 and grew it from a boxing club to a community full of people of all ages with different abilities and goals. She strives to make it a place that everyone belongs and feels connected.

Peggy has been involved in athletics throughout her life including boxing both as an amateur and professional. She is now excelling in triathlons, and learning to hone
her focus as a swimmer, biker and runner. Peggy loves to compete, and as an athlete loves to see how far both physically and mentally she can stretch herself. 

Peggy is a member of the HPP committee for Boxing BC and her coaching has been invaluable for the organization. Thank you Peggy!

As the director of diversity and inclusivity for Boxing BC I am committed to facilitating opportunities to all group s who want to participate in the sport of amateur Boxing. As part of my role I am fully committed to creating new programs and practices that effectively increase diversity in all population denying no one the human right to participate in sport, and providing support/accessibility in a healthy and safe environment. ​

B.C has a large and diverse community of adaptive athletes and people with disabilities. In partnership with our director of diversity and inclusivity, Boxing BC is excited about finding creative and innovative opportunities that allow people with disabilities and adaptive athletes to regularly participate in the sport of Boxing. We are opening up new ideas and connecting with like minded organizations/countries to put Adaptive boxing on the map.​
